St Catherine's, Arthog

St Catherine’s Church was built circa 1808 as a chapel of ease to Llangelynnin Old Church. It is a small church consisting of a nave with pews and a chancel.

There is a gabled porch at the west end with the addition of a small stair tower on its north side. The porch gable carries a bellcote. On the north wall there is a gabled extension which is considered late 19th century. The Church is surrounded by a triangular cemetery.

In the south wall there are arched plain glass windows windows with wood tracery and intricate leading (c 1876). The wall faces in the direction of Cadair Idris, and carries the inscription “I lift up mine eyes unto the hills” (Psalm 121:1). The East wall has a stained-glass memorial window depicting the Annunciation to the Shepherds, and is dated c.1877. High in the West wall there is a later circular stained-glass window dated c. 1952.

There is a circular stone font at the rear of the church. There is a simple wooden west gallery accessed via a spiral staircase housed in the stair-tower. The flooring is plain tiles. The roof is supported by barn-like trusses.
